AUDITORY PROCESSING ASSESSMENTS
For ages 7 and older
Some people can hear sounds but have difficulty making sense of what they hear—particularly in noise or when information is presented quickly.
At Bahama Hearing Clinic, auditory processing assessments investigate whether difficulties processing sound may be contributing to communication or learning challenges.

When an assessment may be considered
Concerns may include:
-
Difficulty understanding speech in background noise.
-
Frequent requests for repetition.
-
Difficulty following spoken instructions.
-
Confusion between similar-sounding words.
-
Greater difficulty with spoken information than written information.
These difficulties can have several explanations and do not, by themselves, establish auditory processing disorder.
What the assessment involves
We begin with a comprehensive hearing assessment and review relevant history. Specialized listening tasks are selected according to the individual’s age, needs, and ability to participate.
For children, parent and teacher questionnaires provide information about listening at home and school. Previous educational, speech-language, or psychological reports may also be helpful.
Understanding the findings
APD can coexist with ADHD, language disorders, learning disabilities, autism, or dyslexia. This evaluation does not diagnose those conditions. Findings may indicate a need for assessment or support from other professionals.
Dr. McKinney will explain the results and appropriate recommendations.
